ROY CARRIER AND THE NIGHT ROCKERS "Whiskey Drinkin'
Man" Right on Rhythm Whether recorded in concert or in the studio,
the 16 tracks that make up "Whiskey Drinkin' Man" have one
thing going for them: plenty of southwest Louisiana dancehall thrust.
Veteran vocalist and button accordionist Roy Carrier has never been
one to veer far from zydeco's primal beat and its party anthems.
Save for a pair of cover versions (including the novelty "My
Toot Toot"), all of the tunes here were composed by Carrier and stick
to the blues-rooted basics. A litany of familiar themes -- liquor,
lust and the occasional lovesick lament -- inspire Carrier's
songwriting, but even the more substantial lyrics tend to be overshadowed
by his band's boisterous rhythmic drive. Of course, the more
exuberant tunes, including the John Lee Hooker-like "Boogie All
Night," are nothing more than open invitations to crowd a dance
floor. Carrier's band follows his no-frills lead throughout the
recording. Guitarist Russell Gordon adds some nice solo touches here
and there, but again it! ..it's the pumped-up combination of Carrier's
squeeze box and rhythm section that keeps the music from flagging.
